Gustavo Petro is a Colombian economist, politician, former guerrilla fighter and senator of Italian descent, who was elected President of Colombia on 19 June 2022.[1]
Together with Francia Márquez — the Afro-Colombian feminist and land defender who joined his ticket as the Vice Presidential candidate — Gustavo Petro will form the first progressive government in the history of Colombia.
For a third time in 2022, a member of the Progressive International won a presidential election — Gabriel Boric in Chile, Xiomara Castro in Honduras, and now Gustavo Petro in Colombia — while PI delegations were on the ground throughout the election to help ensure the integrity, transparency, and fairness of the democratic process.[2]
