Nadia Whittome is a British Labour Party politician who was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for Nottingham East constituency in the UK/2019 General Election. At the age of 23, she became the Baby of the House.

Following the re-election of Boris Johnson's government with an overall majority of 80 seats, Nadia Whittome tweeted:

"I want to thank Jeremy Corbyn. His contribution to Labour will stand the test of time - he is a hero of our movement, and I stand in the tradition that he did.
"We need a democratic, socialist party that is serious about transforming the world."[1]

Early life

Nadia Whittome commented that she first got involved in politics in 2013 due to the effects of the bedroom tax and austerity on her local community.[2]

Whittome worked as a parliamentary intern in the office of Pat Glass, Shadow Minister of State for Europe, during the 2016 EU Referendum campaign.[3] She studied law at the University of Nottingham after attending an access course at Nottingham College. While studying there, she contested the 2017 Nottinghamshire County Council election as the Labour Party candidate for the West Bridgford West ward, where she finished second to the Conservative Party candidate with 1,393 votes.[4][5] Whittome then worked as a hate crime project worker at Communities Inc.[6]

Prior to her election, she was a national committee member of pro-Remain left-wing organisations Another Europe is Possible, and Labour for a Socialist Europe.[7][8][9]

Parliamentary career

Nadia Whittome was selected as the Labour Party candidate for Nottingham East on 28 October 2019.[10] She was elected as MP for the constituency in the UK/2019 General Election with a majority of 17,393 (43.4%).[11] At the age of 23, she was the youngest MP elected in the general election, and therefore gained the unofficial title of Baby of the House.[12][13] The seat has been held by the Labour Party since the 1992 General Election, and had previously been represented by Chris Leslie who himself is a former Baby of the House.[14]

Nadia Whittome is Punjabi, and was also the first BAME MP elected in Nottingham.[15]

Shortly after her election, she announced that she would only be keeping the equivalent of "an average worker's wage", as determined by the Office for National Statistics, of £35,000, after tax, and would donate the remainder of her £79,468 salary as an MP to local charities.[16]

Political opinions

Whittome is a supporter of NATO, and wrote an article for Novara Media advocating sending arms to Ukraine.[17]

“To support arming Ukraine isn’t to oppose the idea of peace talks. The question is what position Ukraine would enter them from. It’s right to avoid escalation into a direct conflict between Moscow and Nato. However, arming the resistance is a way to allow Ukraine to negotiate from a position of strength, not surrender.”
