Katharine Sarah Gallego [1] is an American politician serving as the 62nd mayor of Phoenix, Arizona since 2019. A member of the Democratic Party, she previously served on the Phoenix City Council from 2014 to 2018.

Kate Gallego was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Jewish parents. Her parents are originally from the state of Illinois and moved to New Mexico in 1979.[3] She grew up in Albuquerque and graduated from Albuquerque Academy there. After graduating from high school, Gallego began studying environmental sciences at Harvard University, where he received a bachelor's degree. She later earned a Masters of Business Administration from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.[4]
In 2004, Kate Gallego moved to Phoenix[5] and initially worked for the Arizona State Department of Tourism. In 2013, she was elected to the Phoenix City Council. She was re-elected in 2017. After then-Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton resigned in 2018 for running for election as Arizona's 9th congressional district representative in the United States House of Representatives, Gallego announced her candidacy for the following mayoral election. She resigned from the city council on August 7, 2018.
In the first ballot on November 6, 2018, Gallego received about 45 percent of the vote. In the subsequent runoff on March 12, 2019, she defeated Daniel Valenzuela with 58.6 percent of the vote.[6] Gallego took office on March 21, 2019. She is the third woman to hold the office of mayor for the city of Phoenix and, at the time of her inauguration, the youngest mayor in the ten largest cities in the United States.
In 2010, Kate Gallego married Ruben Gallego, then a member of the Arizona House of Representatives. The marriage was ended in December 2016. Shortly afterwards Gallego became the mother of a son.
