The Moderna COVID‑19 vaccine (elasomeran), codenamed mRNA-1273 and sold under the brand name Spikevax, is a COVID-19 jab developed by Moderna, the United States National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA).

The product is an RNA vaccine composed of modified messenger RNA (modRNA) stated to be encoding a spike protein of SARS-CoV-2, which is encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles.

History

Dr. Tal Zaks, the chief medical officer at Moderna, explained in a 2017 TED talk how the company’s mRNA vaccine was designed to work:

Over the last 30 years, “we’ve been living this phenomenal digital scientific revolution, and I’m here today to tell you, that we are actually hacking the software of life, and that it’s changing the way we think about prevention and treatment of disease."

However, since in its decade of operations its past mRNA vaccines failed to produce hardly any immune response at all, the company has never gained regulatory approval for any of its products before 2020, when Moderna tried to resolve this by adding nanoparticles to its mRNA vaccine, a modification financed by the Pentagon’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

In November 2020, the company claimed it had achieved "94.5% efficiency"in its Covid-19 vaccine. Using a highly "experimental approach" Its first interim analysis was based on 95 cases, of which 90 cases of COVID-19 were observed in the placebo group versus 5 cases observed in the mRNA-1273 group. Based on these interim safety and efficacy data, Moderna submitted for an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and with global regulatory agencies, which prepared the path to several hundred million people being injected.

The product contains 40 trillion mRNA molecules in each injection. Each mRNA “package” is designed to be absorbed into the body's cells. The packages open, the genes are released, the body then gets to work reading these genes and manufacturing trillions and trillions of COVID spike proteins.

Recognizing the broad potential of mRNA science, we set out to create an mRNA technology platform that functions very much like an operating system on a computer. It is designed so that it can plug and play interchangeably with different programs. In our case, the ‘program’ or ‘app’ is our mRNA drug – the unique mRNA sequence that codes for a protein.

Japanese Moderna suspension

On 26 August 2021, Japan suspended use of the Moderna COVID vaccine over concerns of contamination., after two men died. The men, 30 and 38, died within days of receiving their second shots on Aug. 22 and 15, respectively. Since deaths after COVID vaccines are hardly uncommon, the recall is unusual.

The official story is that the 3 lots of the Moderna Covid vaccine doses were recalled because they had a stainless steel contamination related to friction between two pieces of metal in the instrument used to put stoppers in bottles. Moderna’s domestic distributor in Japan, Takeda Pharmaceutical, who conducted the investigation itself, declared “stainless steel is routinely used in heart valves, joint replacements and metal sutures and staples. As such, it is not expected that injection of the particles identified in these lots in Japan would result in increased medical risk,” but this is disingenuous, since even according to its own standards, the death of the men presumably is related to the metallic micro-particles.

Earlier in 2021, a Spanish study claimed to have found Graphene oxide in the vaccines. While the study should be treated with caution - it been strongly questioned - the contamination with "black particles" certainly has some relevance for it. In May 2021, protein contaminants were found it the AstraZeneca vaccine. A few weeks later, Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga announced that he would be resigning.

There might also be more to the story in other ways, as Japan has been a laggard in the global COVID-19 agenda.

Truck accident August 2021

A truck transporting Moderna vaccine doses for Ghana had an accident in West Virginia in August 2021. Cassandra Fairbanks for Timcast reported that a hazmat team from the Department of Defense took over the cleanup of the accident site. "Fact checkers" rated their reporting half true.
