Education
Herkströter studied economics and accountancy at the Rotterdam School of Economics (today Erasmus University Rotterdam).
Career
After his studies, he joined mining company Billiton, which was acquired by Shell. At his new employer, Herkströter works his way up to Chairman of the management board in 1 July 1993.
In 1996 he reorganized the central offices in The Hague and London and the laboratories in Amsterdam and Rijswijk. He introduced "the new Shell", which was supposed to handle things differently than what Shell had used to do in the previous 100 years.[1]
In 1998, Herkströter retired. The disadvantage of the system introduced by him appeared several years later, when it was revealed that managers had overestimated Shell's proven oil reserves for their own bonus gains.[2] It plunged Shell into a financial crisis.
After his directorship at Royal Dutch Shell, he was president-Commissioner of the ING Group until 2007.[3] In that capacity, he could not agree on a merger with ABN AMRO.
