William Herbert Foege is an American physician and epidemiologist who was Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 1977 until 1983.[1]
From 1984 to 2000 Foege was executive director of the Task Force for Child Survival and Development, which raised general vaccination levels of the world's children from 20 percent to 80 percent in just six years.[2][3]
He was a Senior Fellow at the Global Health Program of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation 1999-2001.
In the 2010s[When?], he sat on the board of the deep state connected company Theranos, that by 2015 was exposed as a scam.[4]
“Having had the opportunity to look at their technology, it's very robust. The problems they have been vilified for have to do with lab operations and the fact that they have not published in peer reviewed journals. They are correcting the operational problems, and changes are being made. As for the science, they are preparing to send articles to peer reviewed journals. For me, the bottom line is that global health needs this sort of technology and Theranos is going to solve the problems to provide it. That's what has me excited.”
William Foege (July 25, 2016) [5]
In September 2020, during the Covid deep event, Foege called for "the CDC reclaim its leadership role from the White House", and create a nationwide plan, to include continue lockdowns, face masks and "global cooperation".[6][7]
Education
Foege received a B.A. from Pacific Lutheran University in 1957.[8] He attended medical school at the University of Washington. After receiving his M.D. in 1961, he completed an internship with the United States Public Health Service hospital at Staten Island in 1961–1962.
He participated in the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) between 1962 and 1964, assigned to Colorado.[9][10] He spent a short time with the Peace Corps in India under Charles Snead Houston. Foege entered the Master of Public Health program at the Harvard School of Public Health where he studied under Thomas Huckle Weller.[11] He received his M.P.H. in 1965.[12]
Career
In May 1977, he became the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,[13] and worked there until 1983. He later had several leadership positions:
- President, co-founder, The Task Force for Global Health, 1984-1999[14]
- Senior Fellow, Global Health Program, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation[15]
- Advisory Board Member, Emory University Global Health Institute[16]
