The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) is a public research university in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The flagship of the University of North Carolina system, it is considered a Public Ivy, or a public institution which offers an academic experience similar to that of an Ivy League university. After being chartered in 1789, the university first began enrolling students in 1795, making it one of the oldest public universities in the United States.
UNC's faculty and alumni include 9 Nobel Prize laureates, 23 Pulitzer Prize winners,[1][2] and 51 Rhodes Scholars.[3][4]
Gain-of-function
The University has conducted decades of research into gain-of-function of viruses[5] at its BSL-3 biowarfare lab.[6]
In 2015, Ralph Baric, an infectious-disease researcher at the University, published a study on his team’s efforts to engineer a virus with the surface protein of the SHC014 coronavirus, found in horseshoe bats in China, and the backbone of one that causes human-like severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in mice.[5] Baric and a team that included Baric’s Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) colleague, Shi Zhengli, used genetic engineering and synthetic biology to create a “new bat SARS-like virus . . . that can jump directly from its bat hosts to humans.”[7]
In year 2000, Dr. Baric and UNC sought to patent critical sections of the coronavirus family for their commercial benefit.[8]
NIAID under Anthony Fauci gave Baric over $10.5 million for research for 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017[9][10]
