Paulo José Ribeiro Moita De Macedo is a Portuguese manager and politician, former Director-General of taxes (2004-2007) and former Minister of health. In 2014 he participated in the Annual Meeting of the Bilderberg Group.
Education
He graduated in 1986 in business organization and management from the Higher Institute of Economics and management (ISEG) of the Technical University of Lisbon and holds a postgraduate degree in Tax Management.
Career
After completing his studies, he continued to work as a research assistant at his educational institution, at the same time he began his professional career in the financial consulting department of the Arthur Andersen audit firm.[1]
Macedo has held numerous positions on boards of various companies. Among other things, he was deputy chairman of the Executive Board of the Portuguese bank Banco Comercial Português, but also had other duties in this company. He also sat on the Supervisory Board of the stock exchange company Euronext.
In 2004, the then Portuguese Prime Minister José Manuel Barroso appointed him head of the Portuguese Tax Agency (Direcção-Geral dos Impostos). He held this position until 2007.
On 17 June 2011, Pedro Passos Coelho, who had previously won the parliamentary election, proposed Paulo Macedo as one of four non-party ministers for his cabinet. President Aníbal Cavaco Silva then appointed him Minister of Health on 21 June 2011.
Since February 2, 2017, he has been Chief Executive Officer (Presidente da Comissão Executiva) and Vice-Chairman (Vice-Presidente do Conselho de Administração) of the Portuguese state-owned bank Caixa Geral de Depósitos.[2][3]
He is Chairman of the Executive Committee of Caixa Geral de Depósitos since February 1, 2017.
He was the executive vice-chairman of the Board of Directors of Millennium BCP-Banco Comercial Português. He sat on the Supervisory Board of Euronext from 2010 to 2011.[4]
He was a member of the school council of the Higher Institute of Economics and management.[5]
Family
He is the son of José Albano Pontes Santos Moita Morais de Macedo and his wife Maria José Ribeiro and the great-grandson of the politician José Luís Santos Moita.
He is married to Filomena Maria Cambraia dos Santos and has twins.
On 24 February 2004 he was made a Grand Officer of the Order of Infante D. Henrique, having been elevated to Grand Cross of the same order on 12 February 2016.[6]
