Portuguese manager and politician who attended the 1995 Bilderberg meeting.

Luís Fernando de Mira Amaral is a Portuguese engineer, politician and manager[1][2] who attended the 1995 Bilderberg meeting.

Background

Born in Lisbon, he attended Liceu Camões. His father was from Coimbra and was an employee of the Ministry of finance[3].

Education

He holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the Instituto Superior Técnico of the Technical University of Lisbon (1969) and a master's degree in Economics from the Faculty of economics of the NOVA University Lisbon (1982), with a dissertation entitled energy consumption in the automotive sector in Portugal. He graduated from Stanford University's Stanford Executive Program (2000).

Career

He started his professional career in 1969, as an engineer in the General Directorate of Civil Aeronautics, until 1972. Also in 1969 he became an assistant at the Instituto Superior Técnico, where he has been a visiting professor since 2005. He was an engineer at Energias de Portugal (EDP) from 1975 to 1979. From 1979 to 1984 he was manager of the bachelor's degrees in Business Administration and management and economics at the Catholic University of Portugal. He was a technician at Banco de Fomento Nacional, from 1979 to 1984, and president of the Institute for Financial Management of Social Security from 1984 to 1985. From 1983 to 2004 he was a visiting associate professor at NOVA University Lisbon. Between 2000 and 2002 he was a visiting professor at the Lusíada University of Lisbon.

Political career

He was elected deputy of the district of Santarém in the early legislative elections of July 17, 1987. On November 6, 1985, Luís Mira Amaral was appointed at the age of 39 as Minister of Labor and Social Security in the first government of the liberal Aníbal Cavaco Silva.

He lost his parliamentary mandate in the 1991 elections but was confirmed on October 31 in his ministerial functions within the third Cavaco Silva government. He was finally re-elected deputy for Santarém during the legislative elections of October 1, 1995, but a change in the majority forced him to leave power. He gave up his parliamentary mandate in January 1996.

Board Postions

He was a member of the boards of Directors of Banco Português de Investimento, Banco de Fomento Angola, Moçambique and BCI Fomento, between 1998 and 2002. He chaired the Executive Committee of Caixa Geral de Depósitos in 2004. As a non-executive director he worked for EDP, Unicer, Cimpor, Vista Alegre and Repsol. From 2007 to 2016 he chaired Banco BIC Português.[4][5]

He chaired the industry and energy councils of the business association CIP[6] (Confederação Empresarial de Portugal). He is executive director of the consulting firm SPI, Sociedade Portuguesa de Inovação.[7]
