Klas Mikael Bergenstrand was Director General of the Swedish Security Police (Säpo) 2004–2007. "Bergenstrand was in top physical shape. Therefore, "his mysterious death in 2007" at age 61 - officially from a heart attack - "came as a shock."[1]
Early career
Bergenstrand finished university in 1972. He was hired in 1976 as an expert at the Ministry of Justice. He took over as assessor at the Administrative Court of Appeal in Stockholm in 1980 and became a member of the Administrative Court of Appeal in Sundsvall in 1984. 1984–1988 he was a ministerial adviser at the Ministry of Justice and head of its police and prosecutor's unit; From 1992 to 1994 he was legal head at this department.
He was Deputy National Police Chief 1991–1992 and as Prosecutor-General of Sweden 1994–2004. During this time he carried out major changes, which led to an organization with higher degrees of centralization and of specialization.
On April 1, 2004, he took over as Director General and Chief of the Security Police succeeding Jan Danielsson. In 2007, he died of a heart attack.
He was married to Christina Bergenstrand, Deputy General Counsel.
Chief of the Security Police
When Bergenstrand took over as Säpo leader on April 1, 2004, Deputy CEO Kurt Malmström was acting CEO. Former manager Jan Danielsson had left the post in June 2003 for personal reasons.[2]
Säpo was an organization under harsh criticism, partly due to the murder of Anna Lindh just over six months earlier.[3] Bergenstrand ensured that the Security Police received increased resources, after which he increased bodyguard protection and set up an anti-terror council in collaboration with other authorities.[4] During his first year in office, he authored the book Protecting the Kingdom and Democracy, which conveyed his vision of a reformed and less closed security police force.
In 2006, he announced that is expanding its network of informants. Bergenstrand said that they need tipsters in schools, welfare agencies, and non-government organizations. This, the security police chief said, is in order to find Moslem extremists trying to recruit terrorists.[5]
At Bergenstrand's death, the deputy chief of staff, Kurt Malmström, was appointed head of the Security Police until Anders Danielsson took over as the new chief.
