September 11, 2001
On 9-11, John Keane did "alarmingly little while the attacks were underway."[1]
Later career
In retirement, Keane worked as chairman of the board for the Institute for the Study of War.
In November 2016, shortly after Stanley A. McChrystal declined the post of Secretary of Defense, Keane was offered an appointment to the post, but he declined, citing the death of his wife several months earlier. After Defense Secretary Jim Mattis resigned in December 2018, Trump again offered the job to Keane, who again declined.[2][3][4]
