Erich Gyslingis a Swiss journalist , publicist and author.
Career
Erich Gysling attended schools in Zurich and studied cultural history in Vienna. He worked as a journalist for the daily German newspaper Düsseldorfer Mittag and the radio station RIAS, then for the daily news of Swiss television. In 1964 he became head of the Tagesschau (evening news) editorial team, and in 1968 he co-founded the political and economic program Rundschau. It is the longest running program in Swiss TV.
From 1972 he headed the international editorial team of the newspaper Weltwoche for ten years, then returned to Swiss television. In 1985 he took over the newly created function of editor-in-chief and at the same time head of the Tagesschau, where he was also the presenter of the main edition. In 1990 Gysling took over the management of the Rundschau.
From 1994 to 1996 he was chief commentator for political events in Swiss public TV. Since then he has been working freelance, for example as a moderator and editor of the show Standpunkte for NZZ-Press-TV, as a speaker, travel guide or as a commentator and panelist for numerous media.
Middle East Expert
During his journalistic career, Gysling completed a degree in Arabic and, after intensively studying the Middle East, wrote three books on this subject. In an interview, he joked "As a young reporter, I traveled to Israel once, then two or three times - and then I was the Middle East specialist."[1]
As a seasoned on-the-spot journalist, he cannot understand coffeehouse journalists, of whom there are more and more, who only report from a region by hearsay, characterizing them as “pitiful."[1]

He is also considered as knowledgeable of the Eastern European countries. From 2001 to 2014 he was President of the Forum Ost-West.[1]
Gysling speaks twelve languages, including Arabic, Farsi, Kiswahili and Icelandic, at least to the level that he can have an everyday conversation.
