Dagfinn Vårvik [1] was a Norwegian politician for the Centre Party and editor-in-chief.

Early life

Vårvik was born in Trøndelag in 1924. He participated early in the farm work with his brothers, and his brother Martin Vårvik was later general secretary of the agricultural Centre Party (until 1959 the Peasants' Party). He graduated in 1944 and became cand.oecon. in 1951. He also attended an international seminar at Harvard University in 1959 as editor-in-chief.

Career

He began his political career as secretary of the Peasants' Party's (from 1959 Centre Party) parliamentary group 1952–1961. Even then, he marked himself as a leading supplier of premises for the party. He was then employed as a political contributor to the then party newspaper Nationen. Two years later, in 1963, he became editor-in-chief. Vårvik remained in this position until 1988, only partially interrupted by his periods as minister and party chairman, and was a political commentator in the newspaper until 1991.

From August to September 1963 he was Minister of Finance during the short-lived centre-right cabinet Lyng. He was later Minister of Wages and Prices from 1965 to 1971 during the cabinet Borten, and Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1972 to 1973 during the cabinet Korvald.

After the bitter 1972 EEC referendum, where his party was strongly and successfully against Norwegian membership, he managed to mend fences with the main conservative party for future government coalitions.

He was a deputy representative to the Norwegian Parliament from Akershus during the term 1961-1965. He was a deputy member of Oslo city council in 1971-1975. He was the chairman of the Centre Party from 1973 to 1977.

Vårvik graduated with a cand.oecon. degree in 1951. He worked in the newspaper Nationen from 1961 to 1991, as a journalist, in the period 1963 to 1988 as editor-in-chief. Vårvik died on 25 March 2018 at the age of 93.[2]
