President-Director of Philips from 1986 to 1990, when he attended he 1987 Bilderberg meeting.

Cornelis Johannes (Cor) van der Klug was president/director of Philips from 1986 to 1990, when he attended he 1987 Bilderberg meeting.

Education

Klugt studied economics, but had to cancel his studies in 1943 due to the war.

Career

Van Der Klugt joined Philips in 1950, where he would spend his entire career. Much of it was spent in South America. He joined the Philips organization in Chile in 1960 as a management assistant through various positions. In 1963 he was appointed director of Philips Uruguay, followed by the post of commercial director of Philips Brazil in 1968.[1]

In 1978, he became a member of the board of directors. After taking office of President-Director in 1986, as successor to Wisse Dekker[2], he brought the American Philips subsidiary NAPC, which was too independent in the opinion of the main management, back under central control.

Due to the enormous price erosion, due to a cheap dollar and yen, Van Der Klugt was forced to sell quite a few business units. NKF (Nederlandse Kabelfabriek) producer of high-current and telephone cables was taken public (1987) and the gas factory was sold to Air Liquide (1989). Philips also participated in the Taiwanese joint venture start-up chip manufacturer TSMC, bought out Siemens from the record company Polygram (1987) and under his management started a joint venture with Whirlpool for the white goods (1989).

In the last years of his reign, he somewhat lost his grip on the concern, which suffered losses. In 1990 he was deposed by president-commissioner Wisse Dekker after a drastic decline in results. In this resignation, an affair with his secretary was used to weaken him.[3] He was succeeded by Jan Timmer.
