Burhan Asaf Belge was a Turkish politician, who was a prominent figure among the young intellectuals during the early periods of Republic of Turkey and was the representative of Muğla province during the 11th term of Turkish National Assembly[1].
He attended the 1959 Bilderberg conference. He was arrested in the 1960 coup d'etat.
Early life
Belge came from the family of an Ottoman governor (bey). He studied architecture in Germany, where he married for the first time.
In the years 1932 to 1934 he was a regular contributor to Kadro, a left-wing journal dedicated to "discussions on ideology and economic-development strategy."[2]. The main subject of his writings was the idea of westernization. He then worked as a teacher for ten years.
He married for the third time with Zsa Zsa Gabor, whom he met in a beauty contest held in Hungary during a trip to Central Europe in 1934.
After World War 2
When the Democratic Party was established, he joined the party in May 1946. At the request of Adnan Menderes, he founded the newspaper Demokrat İzmir in İzmir. He disagreed with the founders and left the party and Izmir in 1948.
Between 1948-1950, he published a two-page newspaper called " Weekly Political Letter ", which he published alone. He was appointed as the editor-in-chief of Yeni İstanbul Newspaper in the early 1950s, and left this post in August. After 1950, he did not publish an article in any newspaper until 1953.
In 1953, he married his fourth wife, Marion, of German descent. He returned to the Democratic Party the same year. Between 1955 and 1960, he was the editor-in-chief of Zafer newspaper, the official publication of the Democratic Party. In 1957, he entered the parliament as a deputy of the Democratic Party for Muğla.
In 1961, after the 1960 coup d'état, he was sentenced to life imprisonment as deputy chairman of the Democratic Party, but was granted an amnesty two years later. After being released with the 1964 pardon, he settled in Germany and worked at German Radio until his death in 1967.
Burhan Asaf Belge is the father of prominent Turkish intellectual Murat Belge and the first husband of actress Zsa Zsa Gabor (from May 1935 to December 1941). He never had a child with Zsa Zsa Gabor. He was also a brother-in-law of Yakup Kadri Karaosmanoğlu.[3]
