The Technical University of Munich (TUM or TU Munich) is a public research university in Munich.
History
It was founded in 1868 on the initiative of Ludwig II of Bavaria. From 1877 it took the name of Königlich Bayerische Technische Hochschule München. The transition from Hochschule (professional university school) to Universität (University) dates back to 1970.
The Weihenstephan site became part of the then Technische Hochschule in 1930: until then it was a separate institute, born in 1804 and elevated to the rank of academy (Kgl. Bayerische Akademie für Landwirtschaft und Brauereien, in Italian Royal Bavarian Academy for agriculture and brewing art) in 1895.
During the Second World War, 80 percent of the university's facilities in Munich had been destroyed. Under these difficult conditions, teaching resumed in April 1946.
