The Armenian Genocide happened from 1914 to 1923.[1]

Turkish official narrative

Turkey does not agree that a genocide took place. While it admits that a large number of Armenians died during harsh deportations during WW1, necessary to remove a fifth column, it also points out that the number of victims may be inflated and thus do not constitute a genocide. Also the use of dubious and prejudicial Armenian sources is problematic[2], as is the strong Armenian lobby in the United States and France

The Peace Treaty of Sevres, which was imposed upon the defeated Ottoman Empire, required the Ottoman government to hand over to the Allied Powers people accused of massacres. Subsequently, 144 high Ottoman officials were arrested and deported for trial by the British to the island of Malta. The principal informants to the British High Commission in Istanbul leading to the arrests were local Armenians and the Armenian Patriarchate. At the conclusion of the investigation, the British Procurator General determined that it was "improbable that the charges would be capable of proof in a court of law," exonerated and released all 144 detainees -- after two years and four months of detention without trial. [2]

As of 2023, the only section of Turkish society openly willing to agree a genocide happened, are liberal intellectuals, often in [[Istanbul].[3]

Continuation?

There were words by an Azerbaijani officials in the mid 2000s about the "complete elimination" of Armenians, that there will be no Armenian state in the next 25 years and that the people have no right to live in the region.[4]

France

In 2021 and 2016, the French parliament criminalized "the denial of the 1915 Armenian genocide in Ottoman Turkey and other crimes against humanity recognized by the French state." Any "public denial"would have been punishable by up to one year’s imprisonment and a 45,000-euro ($50,000) fine. The French Constitutional Council overturned the laws both in 2012 and 2017, ruling that the laws represented an unconstitutional "blow to the freedom of expression which is neither necessary nor proportionate."[5]

Nigel Gould-Davies“For Azerbaijan, [the reconquest of Nagorno-Karabakh] is a total victory won by the cruel, hard methods of military force and economic blockade, together with training and equipment from Turkey....But the key question is how relations between the west and Azerbaijan will develop. The west's energy ties with the oil and gas-rich country are more important than ever as it weans itself off Russian supplies. Now there are new security possibilities, especially in light of the war in Ukraine. Azerbaijan is the only country that borders both Russia and Iran, two western adversaries whose ever-closer relations evoke growing alarm. Azerbaijan’s ties with Turkey, a Nato member that also provides weapons support to Ukraine, means that it is receiving military training according to the alliance's standards. All this offers the potential for a deeper relationship, if the west has the strategic imagination to grasp it.”Nigel Gould-Davies5 October 2023
