Anders Christian Sjaastad is a Norwegian politician who attended two Bilderberg meetings as Norwegian Minister of Defence. He later became leader of the European Movement Norway.[1]

Background

Sjaastad was born in Oslo in 1942, the son of manager Andreas Sjaastad (1895-1977) and Ingrid Mørk (1902-1992).

Education

He graduated in 1962 and took a degree in in political science from the University of Oslo from 1969. As a student he was chairman of the Conservative Student Union in 1965 and chairman of the Norwegian Student Society in 1967. Sjaastad was a research fellow at the Department of political science at the University of Oslo 1968-1970.

Career

In 1970 he was employed by the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI) as a researcher, and he was also NUPI's chief information officer until he became a minister in 1981. After his time as a member of parliament, Storting, he was again a researcher from 1998, and senior adviser from 2003.

He was a member of the Committee on arms control and disarmament 1974-1981 and the Defence Commission of 1974 from 1974-1978

He was first vice-chairman of the Oslo Conservative Party 1977-1987 and leader 1996-2000. He was deputy representative to the Storting in the periods 1981-1985 and 1997-2001 and was permanently elected 1985-1997.

He was Minister of Defence from 14. October 1981 to 25. April 1986.

He was a Deputy member of the Norwegian Nobel Committee from 2003 to 2005. He was Leader of the European Movement in Norway 1989-1992.
