The 2024 Crocus City Hall attack took place on 22 March 2024 in Krasnogorsk, a Russian city on the western edge of Moscow, when a mass shooting and multiple explosions occurred killing at least 137 people and injuring 182. Over 5,000 people were evacuated from the concert hall.[1]

Masked and camouflaged gunmen opened fire on the audience waiting for a rock concert to begin.

Russia's Foreign Ministry called the incident a terrorist attack.

According to Western media, Islamic State – Khorasan Province (ISIS-K) claimed responsibility.[2]

The United Nations Security Council “condemned in the strongest terms the heinous and cowardly terrorist attack” in Krasnogorsk.[3]

Ukraine involvement

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) has said the perpetrators of the attack on Moscow’s concert hall were en route to the border with Ukraine when they were apprehended. The FSB has told President Putin that 11 people had been detained, including four people directly involved, and further work was under way to identify more accomplices, Interfax news agency cited the Kremlin as saying. The suspects had contacts within Ukraine, the FSB added.

Ukraine’s presidential advisor, reacting to the Moscow attack, earlier said “Ukraine had absolutely nothing to do with these events”.

Reactions

President Putin: "Retribution is coming"

On 23 March 2024, President Putin declared a national day of mourning on Sunday 24 March and said in a televised speech:

"We will identify and punish everyone who stands behind the terrorists, who prepared this atrocity, this attack on Russia, on our people."[4]

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said in a broadcast on Prva TV channel:

"Calls from the US and British embassies for their citizens not to visit the shopping centre in Moscow indicate that their intelligence services had information about possible terrorist attacks.
“On March 7, the American embassy called on its citizens not to visit the shopping centre. Then the British and someone else did the same.
"This means that their intelligence services intercepted certain negotiations, received information and knew that something would happen.”[8]

Maria Zakharova, Russian spokesperson said:

“The White House said it saw no indication that Ukraine or Ukrainians were involved in the terrorist attack in Moscow.
"On what basis do officials in Washington draw any conclusions about anyone's innocence in the midst of a tragedy? If the United States has or had reliable information in this regard, then it must be immediately transferred to the Russian side.
"And if there is no such data, then the White House has no right to issue indulgences to anyone.
"All those involved, as stated by the Russian leadership, will be identified by the competent authorities.”[9]

Swiss Policy Research discussed the possibility that it might have been a staged event, as Russia has seen many suspected false flag attacks before.[10]Also Riley Waggaman found some of the videos a bit curious[11]
