The United Against Nuclear Iran is a deep state organization outside democratic control, created to sabotage, with fair means or foul, any chance of a rapprochement with Iran.

The members are very connected to intelligence services, including former leaders of Mossad and MI6. UANI is in all likelihood a straight-out Israeli-led effort.

On 22 January 2024, BBC News published an article citing the group.[1]

Objectives

The objectives talk openly of 'utilize media outreach' (ie propaganda) to persuade 'our' elected leaders and the population in Western countries:

  • Inform the public about the nature of the Iranian regime, including its desire and intent to possess nuclear weapons, as well as Iran's role as a state sponsor of global terrorism, and a major violator of human rights at home and abroad;
  • Heighten awareness nationally and internationally about the danger that a nuclear-armed Iran poses to the region and the world;
  • Mobilize public support, utilize media outreach, and persuade our elected leaders to voice a robust and united American opposition to a nuclear Iran;
  • Lay the groundwork for effective US policies in coordination with European and other allies;
  • Persuade the regime in Tehran to desist from its quest for nuclear weapons, while striving not to punish the Iranian people, and;
  • Promote efforts that focus on vigorous national and international, social, economic, political and diplomatic measures.[2]

Threatening Businesses

One of the main activities of UANI is maintaining the economic blockade of Iran. The website contains a list of 'business risks', like 'reputational risks, 'kidnap and arrest risk', 'hacking & cybersecurity risk' (by Iran, naturally), 'sanctions risks' etc [3], in the style of 'wouldn't it be to bad if this happened to you?'

It is also interested in cancelling sales of civilian airlines to Iran, and to stop foreign automobile companies making cars in Iran, 'accounting for 10% of GDP'[4], this hypocritically 'while striving not to punish the Iranian people'. Since the US trade with Iran is negligible, this means that in reality 90% of the business losses is from European and Japanese companies[5].

State Secrets Lawsuit

In 2014, the United States Department of Justice intervened in a private lawsuit filed against UANI and requested its dismissal on the ground that the continued litigation of the case would jeopardize US national security. In July 2013, Greek shipping magnate Victor Restis brought a defamation lawsuit against UANI for claiming that his companies were "front men for the illicit activities of the Iranian regime." In September of the following year, the United States Government (which was not party to the case) filed a motion asserting its right to intervene in the proceedings and requesting that Restis's complaint be dismissed because "continued litigation would risk disclosure" of sensitive matters pertaining to national security.[6] The US government's motion was granted by a federal judge in 2015, marking a rare expansion of the state secrets privilege into private civil litigation in which the government was not a party.[7][8][9]

Institute for Strategic Dialogue

In May 2012, UANI formed a transatlantic partnership to prevent a nuclear-armed Iran with the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, a London-based think tank.[10] August Hanning, former president of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) of Germany, is senior advisor to the initiative.[11]

Critics

Ben Freeman, Director of the Democratizing Foreign Policy Program at the Quincy Institute, told Alan MacLeod that:

UANI are a force multiplier. They provide at least the veneer of an intellectual infrastructure for the Iran hawk movement. They did not invent being hawkish on Iran, but they sure made it a heck of a lot easier[12]

Funding

The funding of the group is secretive. Eli Clifton was able to discover its funding for the year 2013. The top donors are a pair of trusts associated with the billionaire Thomas Kaplan and a family foundation operated by Republican mega-donor Sheldon Adelson and his wife Miriam. Together, the funding associated with Kaplan and Adelson accounted for more than three-quarters of the group’s total revenue of $1.7 million for the 2013 tax year.

Kaplan's contributions to the group were larger overall—totaling $843,000, around half the UANI’s annual revenue for that tax year, given through two separate trusts managed by his company. [13] Kaplan is the son-in-law of Israeli billionaire Leon Recanati and is close with Israeli Prime Ministers Naftali Bennet and Yair Lapid.[14][15]

A potential third source of funding is the Gulf monarchies of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Leaked emails show UANI officials soliciting support from the Emirati royal family.[16]
