She is considered to be the world's foremost expert on chimpanzees for her 60-year study of social and family interactions of wild chimpanzees since she first went to Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania in 1960, where she witnessed human-like behaviours amongst chimpanzees, including armed conflict.
She is the founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and the Roots & Shoots programme, and she has worked extensively on conservation and animal welfare issues. She was on the board of the Nonhuman Rights Project since its founding in 1996. In April 2002, she was named a UN Messenger of Peace. Goodall is an honorary member of the World Future Council.

Opinions
Overpopulation
During a session at the World Economic Forum in 2020 she said:[2][3]
“All these [environmental] things we talk about wouldn’t be a problem if there was the size of population that there was 500 years ago.”
Jane Goodall (January 2020) [4]
In 2007 she said:
“It’s our population growth that underlies just about every single one of the problems that we’ve inflicted on the planet. If there were just a few of us, then the nasty things we do wouldn’t really matter and Mother Nature would take care of it — but there are so many of us.”
Jane Goodall (November 2007) [5]
