André S. Spoor was Editor-in-Chief of NRC Handelsblad when he attended two Bilderberg meetings. He was also editor-in-chief of the political weekly Elsevier from 1986 to 1988.
Background
Spoor was born as the son of Simon Hendrik Spoor, an officer. He later held the command of the colonial Army in the Dutch East Indies from 1946 to 1949, but fell ill on the day of his appointment as general and died two days later.
Education
André studied theology, but then decided to study journalism.[1]
Career
He became an editor at the Amsterdam-based Algemeen Handelsblad. He worked there in the foreign editorial office and was a correspondent in Bonn, Washington and New York. In 1968, Spoor became deputy editor-in-chief. After the merger of the newspaper with the Nieuwe Montendamsche Courant to form the NRC Handelsblad, he was part of the chief editorial team together with Jérôme Heldring and Henk Hofland. Since his two colleagues left the newspaper in the course of 1972, he was left alone in the end. Despite slight circulation losses during the first five years since the merger, a significant upswing subsequently occurred under his leadership.[2][1]
In 1986, Spoor became the new editor-in-chief at Elsevier, the country's largest political weekly. He changed it by means of a renewal of the editorial office, a new layout and a larger cultural section. However, a bypass operation and circulation declines put an end to this function after only two years. Spoor then returned to the daily newspaper NRC Handelsblad as a correspondent in Vienna.[1]
