Marco Rubio (born 28 May 1971) is an American attorney and politician currently serving as the senior United States Senator from Florida. A Republican, Rubio was previously Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives. Rubio unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination in the 2016 United States presidential election, winning presidential primaries in the State of Minnesota, the District of Columbia, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.[2] Donald Trump, following the 2024 election, may appoint him as Secretary of State.[3][4]

Background

His parents left Cuba for the United States in 1956 (Rubio sometimes claimed they were fleeing Fidel Castro).[5]

Criticism

Cuban media does refer to him as "reputed member of the anti-Cuban mafia based in Miami".[6][7]

Drug-smuggling family

In 1987, Rubio's brother-in law Orlando Cicilia was arrested in a sting operation and eventually sentenced to a lengthy prison term in one of the biggest drug cases of Miami's 1980s cocaine-cowboys era. Cicilia's residence, where Rubio and his family also had lived for a while and where Rubio had done casual work for months after moving out, was an important hub for the $75 million cocaine operation.[8][9]

In 2002, as Majority Whip of the Florida House of Representatives Rubio "used his official position to urge state regulators to grant a real estate license to his brother-in-law, a convicted cocaine trafficker who had been released from prison 20 months earlier."[10]

Inside spook knowledge

Rubio indirectly revealed the US role in the 2019 Venezuelan blackout, an attempt to knock out the country's electricity. At noon on March 7, during a hearing on Venezuela at the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee, Rubio explicitly called for the U.S. to stir "widespread unrest,[11]" declaring that it "needs to happen" in order to achieve regime change. "Venezuela is going to enter a period of suffering no nation in our hemisphere has confronted in modern history," Rubio proclaimed.[12]
