Gabriel Attal is a French politician. A "rising star" in French politics, he was selected a 2020 Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. He attended the 2023 Bilderberg meeting.
Background
Attal is of Jewish heritage. His father, Yves Attal, was a lawyer and film producer. Gabriel Attal "maintains positive relations with the Jewish community", despite not identifying as Jewish himself. In a rare statement on the matter, Attal shared an anecdote with "Gala" magazine. He recounted how his father once told him, "You may not be Jewish, but you will always feel solidarity with the Jewish people because you will always face anti-Semitism due to your family name."[1]
Attal attended a private school, the École alsacienne, in the 6th arrondissement.[2] Taking up a place at Sciences Po in 2007, he created a committee for the support of Íngrid Betancourt, the Franco-Colombian hostage held by the FARC.[3] He graduated from Sciences Po in 2012 with a Master of Public Affairs, having studied law at Panthéon-Assas University from 2008 to 2011, with a year (2009-2010) spent working with Éric de Chassey, director of the French Academy at Rome.[4]
Career
Attal fortuitously was one of the first people to back Macron when he decided to run for president in 2017 and joined the astroturf party created for him, En Marche!. Weeks after Macron took over the presidency, Attal was elected as an MP and, at 29, he became the youngest minister under the Fifth Republic, in charge of youth issues.[5]
He was appointed Minister of Public Action and Accounts between May 2022 and July 2023, a strategic job previously held by three former presidents.[5]
He was the government spokesperson under President Emmanuel Macron from 2020 to 2022, during Covid.
He was selected a 2020 Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. He attended the 2023 Bilderberg meeting.
