Scientist and biological researcher who has questioned the efficacy of "gain-of-function" research and suggested that COVID-19 may have been cause by means other than a synthetic virus. |
Dr Jonathan Jay Couey is a scientist and biological researcher who has published work in journals such as Science, Nature Neuroscience, PNAS and Neuron. He argues that the Deep State used bioweapons to create the illusion of an infectious virus, relying on a variety of psychological warfare techniques to promote panic.

Background
Career
Couey has worked the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.[1] He reports that after failing to comply with COVID protocols his contract was not renewed.
As part of his research, he transfected animals, which were always disposed of soon after.
He founded Gigaohm Biological.
Opinions
“I think that the origins of the virus was a lab leak drama. Probably there was a bioweapon in the beginning to seed everything because that would be necessary, but I don't think there is any evidence for a virus that has gone around the world for 3 years. And the PCR tests and the sequences are not evidence of that... we don't have any of that data from pre 2020, so you don't know whether those sequences could have been found in 2019, 18, 17, 16 because no one was looking.”
Jonathan Jay Couey (8 February 2023) [2]
Criticism of zoonotic origin
In January 2020 Couey argued against the "lone bat" theory of a zoonotic origin for COVID-19, suggesting that it was more likely to be a genetically engineered virus from a bioweapons lab.<refDocument:Logistical and Technical Exploration into the Origins of the COVID-19 virus></ref> He later came to doubt that what was referred to as "COVID-19" had any existence distinct from the naturally occurring coronaviruses, which he terms the "swarm".
Critism of the gain-of-functioned origin
Couey has repeatedly stated that since coronaviruses cannot replicate with high fidelity, gain-of-function work could not create a virus that would last fo years, encircling the globe. His claim is that the random mutations would quickly cause and specially engineered features to degrade. As of December 2023 he was not known to have answered the important question of how, if coronaviruses are so poor at replication, "the swarm" is preserved.
Couey has highlighted how cDNA could be used to effectively replicate a naturally occurring virus. He notes that in contrast to the low fidelity replication of a natural coronavirus (only 1/N particles are actually infectious, where N is large), a cloned virus would be far more concentrated, capable of delivering a high viral load, and therefore being highly dangerous and able to kill healthy people. While releasing such a virus would creating the appearance of a deadly virus, only those initially exposed to it would be severely affected, since subsequent infections would deliver only the natural proportion (1/N) of replication competent particles. Couey suggests that such releases may have occurred in March/April 2020 to promote COVID panic and facilitate acquiescence to the COVID-19 lockdowns and similar measures.
