United States Air Force general who was rewarded with board positions in a large number of military-industrial companies after retirement.

Lester L. Lyles is a former United States Air Force general who was both Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force and commander of Air Force Materiel Command.[1][2]

Background

After school, he first studied mechanical engineering at Howard University, graduated from this with a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering and then joined the US Air Force. He received a master's degree in mechanical and nuclear engineering from New Mexico State University (NMSU) in 1969.

Military-industrial career

Lyles entered the Air Force in 1968 as a distinguished graduate of the Air Force ROTC program. He worked in various assignments, including Program Element Monitor of the Short-Range Attack Missile at Headquarters U.S. Air Force in 1974, and as special assistant and aide-de-camp to the commander of Air Force Systems Command (AFSC) in 1978.

After working as director of the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization from 1996 to 1999, he became Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force as General in 1999. From 2000 until his retirement in 2003, he was the commander of Air Force Command at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, one of nine major commands in the US Air Force.

After retiring from active military service, he went into private business , getting a job on the boards of directors of General Dynamics in 2003, Kellogg Brown & Root in 2007[3], and Precision Castparts in 2008. He has also served on the boards of directors of DPL, Inc., MTC Technologies, Inc. and USAA.[4] He has also been on the Board of Directors of the Battelle Institute since 2006, and on the Boards of Directors of the Air Force Association and the American Security Project.
