Hans Engen was an Under Secretary of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Norwegian ambassador to the United States.

Activities

During the German occupation of Norway from 1940 to 1945, he was a coordinator between the Norwegian government-in-exile (in London) and the Norwegian resistance movement.

From 1946 to 1949 he was the foreign affairs editor of newspaper Verdens Gang, where he was particularly convincing in his arguments in support of Norwegian accession to NATO in 1949.[1]

From 1951 to 1952 he worked as Norway's counsellor of embassy at the United Nations.

He was Permanent Representative of Norway to the United Nations from 1952-1958. From 1958-1963, under Gerhardsen's Third Cabinet, Engen was State Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he was sceptical of the covert operation to sell heavy water to the Israeli nuclear program.

He was Norwegian ambassador to the United States from 1963 to 1966.[2]

He led the committee that formulated Norwegian development assistance policy, “Engen-utvalget”, 1960–61, (a field that is a bigger part of the Cold War than commonly known.)

Death

Engen died on a skiing holiday in Norway.[2]
