Dr. André Batenburg was a Dutch banker. He gained prominence in the 1970s and 80s as chairman of the board of ABN, which would later merge with Amrobank to form the megabank ABN AMRO. He attended the 1978 Bilderberg meeting.
Education
In 1948, Batenburg graduated cum laude from the Nederlandsche Economische Hogeschool in Rotterdam.[1]
Career
He joined the Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij (NHM), which would later merge with the Twentsche Bank under the name ABN. In 1956 he received his doctorate on his thesis "some main lines of monetary policy".
From 1974 to 1985, Batenburg was a top executive at the ABN.[1][2]
He also conducted research for the United Nations on development aid in Africa.[1]
Other functions
Batenburg had a great interest in music and other artistic expressions. He was chairman of the Dutch Opera and raised funds for the renovation of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. He was also chairman of the Sutherland committee, which advised the government on major reorganisations in the field of arts and culture.[1]
In 1985, Batenburg was appointed Commander of the Order of Orange-Nassau. He also received the decoration of Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion.
