Purging the CIA

Stansfield Turner pressured Ted Shackley to quit the CIA and also removed a lot of top officers from the organisation. Peter Dale Scott suggests that far from limiting the influence of the US deep state, it relocated to offshore milieux - such as Le Cercle and The Safari Club - that were probably more or less unknown to Stansfield Turner, so by the late 1970s, the deep state was more secure than ever.[1]

Out of respect for the victims of the numerous massacres, the Italian journalist conducting the interview insisted that Turner clarify the strategy of tension. But Turner angrily ripped off his microphone and concluded the interview by shouting: "I said, no questions about Gladio!"[2]
