Confidential informant
One of the files on the WikiLeaks website reveals that Cantoni was a confidential informant to a US embassy official, reporting his concern for the health of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, worn out by sleepless nights spent partying[2]. This was learned from a confidential cable from the US embassy in Rome.[3]
Cantoni rejected these revelations, declaring: "From the document released by WikiLeaks, I read with further surprise and bewilderment that Premier Berlusconi would have called me to inform me of the arrest of carabinieri in the Marrazzo case and that I would have confided in the role and the reliability of the Italian intelligence services. I must therefore specify and deny in the most absolute and categorical way that Berlusconi has never phoned me or informed me about what was reported in the WikiLeaks document about this arrest, nor have I ever expressed assessments regarding the role and reliability of the our intelligence services, especially since it is not a matter of my institutional competence."[4]
