Francesca Mary Unsworth (born 29 December 1957) is a British journalist and media executive who was appointed the BBC's Deputy Director of News & Current Affairs in 2013.
Fran Unsworth assumed the role of Director News & Current Affairs after James Harding stood down on 1 January 2018.
Before then she was in various senior positions in the BBC, including director of the BBC World Service Group and as a member of the BBC's executive board.[1]
In September 2021, Fran Unsworth announced her resignation and will leave the BBC at the end of January 2022.[2] Her replacement Deborah Turness was appointed on 6 January 2022.[3]

Reappointed
Fran Unsworth's first term of appointment was 1 April 2019 - 31 March 2021 at a salary of £340,000 per annum.[4] She was re-appointed to the Board as an Executive director for a further two years from 1 April 2021 until 31 March 2023.[5]

On 7 August 2018, a letter from Jewish Voice for Labour member Pamela Blakelock was delivered to the BBC's Director General, Tony Hall, and Director of News & Current Affairs, Francesca Unsworth, complaining about the BBC's biased and inaccurate reporting of anti-semitism allegations towards Jeremy Corbyn.[6]
Upholding Reithian principles
"We regret that the BBC has failed to comply with its own codes with regard to impartiality and accuracy. Given the gravity of allegations of anti-semitism, the role performed by the BBC is all the more critical if it is to live up to Reithian principles of informing the public."[7]
