Drug overdose (cause of death) | |
---|---|
A drug overdose is the taking of an excess of drugs with damaging, often fatal consequences. Since 2016 the most common cause of overdose in the US has been synthetic opiods, particularly fentanyl.[1]
USA
In USA, fatal drug overdoses, particularly by opioid pain killers, is an increasingly common cause of death. In 2015, over 33,000 people in USA died of an opioid overdose, more than any earlier year.[2] This trend has continued. From 1999-2019, around 400,000 people died of opioid overdose in USA.[3] In 2019, the trend reversed[4] and a record number died from overdoses in 2020.[5]
Clandestine assassinations
Lack of evidence as to peoples intent when taking drugs, and the possible clandestine (or posthumous) administration of drugs allow fatal drug overdoses to be used to mask assassinations.
- Dorothy Kilgallen died from an overdose after having announced her firm intent to keep investigating the JFK assassination.
- David Kelly reportedly died of bleeding from a self-inflicted wound, exacerbated by self-administration of a pain killer, Co-proxamol.
