Background
Tim Walz was born in West Point, Nebraska. In 1984 he moved to Texas and took courses at the University of Houston in East Asian studies while being enlisted in the Texas Army National Guard. This was at the height of the Cold War, and East Asian studies would have been a typical recruitment ground for the CIA.
Afterward, he went to Arkansas, where he built tanning beds in a factory and was an instructor in the Arkansas Army National Guard.[2] In 1987, Walz returned to Nebraska. After graduating from Chadron State College, Nebraska, in 1989, he accepted a one-year teaching position in Guangdong, China.[3], before moving to Minnesota in 1996.
He worked as a social studies teacher and football coach in the Mankato school district before running for Congress in 2006. In 1994, the Tim Walz and his wife Gwen founded a travel company called Educational Travel Adventures, taking groups of American high schoolers on trips to China. Tim Walz personally led tour groups of children in China every year for years, their last trip in 2003.[4]
Political career
Tim Walz was elected to the United States House of Representatives for Minnesota's 1st congressional district in 2006, defeating six-term Republican incumbent Gil Gutknecht. He was reelected five times, resigning in 2019 after being elected governor.
He became Governor of Minnesota on 6 November 2018, defeating the Republican nominee, Hennepin County commissioner Jeff Johnson. He was reelected in the 2022 Minnesota gubernatorial election, defeating Republican nominee Scott Jensen.
Covid
During the beginning of Covid in spring and summer 2020, Minnesota introduced strict early lockdowns.[5] As the "vaccine" introduction got closer, Governor Walz introduced a hard lockdown on his state. He encouraged residents to snitch on each other on a state-run hotline. He sharply tightened Minnesota's rules on gatherings in November 2020, barred "indoor or outdoor gatherings, except with immediate household members" and added "no person from outside your immediate household should enter your home." He also closed bars, restaurants, gyms, movie theaters, organized sports, and pools.[6]
Deep state operative Andy Slavitt, who later became a senior "healthcare"" advisor in the Joe Biden administration was among Walz' top advisers. An October 2020 profile of Slavitt called him a "a friend and trusted adviser" to the governor.[7] At the time, Slavitt was among the loudest and most aggressive pro-lockdown advocates on Twitter and in corporate media.[8]
George Floyd riots
While locking down during Covid, Walz supported the protests and riots after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis in May and June 2020. "We certainly believe that there’s a right that people have to gather," he told reporters.[9]
VP nominee
On 6 August 2024, Vice President Kamala Harris announced her selection of Tim Walz as her running mate in the 2024 United States presidential election. This followed a selection process in which Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, Illinois Governor J. B. Pritzker, and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro were also reported to be on the Harris campaign's shortlist prior to Walz's selection.[10]
In a post on X, President Biden said that Harris' choice of Walz - who he has known for two decades - was "great".
- "The Harris-Walz ticket will be a powerful voice for working people and America's middle class. They will be the strongest defenders of our personal freedoms and our democracy.
