The Devil's Chessboard
Talbot's book The Devil's Chessboard: Allen Dulles, the CIA, and the Rise of America's Secret Government is a biography examining the career of Allen Dulles.[3] According to Talbot, Dulles orchestrated the JFK assassination at the behest of corporate leaders who perceived him to be threat to "national security", lobbied Lyndon B. Johnson to have himself appointed to the Warren Commission, then arranged Lee Harvey Oswald as the 'lone nut" patsy.[3] The book charges that the RFK assassination was also arranged by the same cabal as they feared that he would expose his brother's killers.[3]

In a review for the San Francisco Chronicle, Glenn C. Altschuler stated that "Talbot’s indictment is long, varied and sensational."[3] The book paints a damning picture of Allen Dulles, who appears quite clearly to be a psychopath through acts such as volunteering his own children for CIA-sponsored torture such as the MK-Ultra.[5]
In a review for Talbot's Salon.com, Liam O'Donoghue writes that "Talbot details how it was not only enemies who had reason to fear Dulles, but his own friends and family, as well. The book veers into a dark, terrifying investigation of the MKUltra Project, a hideous “mind control program” developed by the CIA during Dulles’ reign as director, that dosed unsuspecting people with LSD, pushed the limits of sleep deprivation and engaged in other deeply unethical experiments. The program has been exposed, bit by bit, over decades, thanks to lawsuits and previous investigative reporting, but Talbot sheds light on how Dulles subjected his own son and attempted to “enroll” his wife in these hideous “therapies.”"[6]
"Based on extremely circumstantial evidence, Talbot’s 2015 book The Devil’s Chessboard, something of a sequel to Brothers, suggests that former longtime CIA Director Allan Dulles may have been the likely mastermind, with his motive being a mixture of his extreme Cold Warrior views and his personal anger at his 1961 dismissal from his position."[7]
