Erik Hoffmeyer was a Danish academic and central banker.
Early Life
Erik Hoffmeyer was the son of the bishop of Aarhus Diocese Skat Hoffmeyer and Aase Thejll and was probably best known for his time as Governor of the Danish National Bank in the years 1965 -1994.
He graduated from Aarhus Cathedral School in 1942. Because of his involvement in the resistance movement against the German occupation, he stayed in Sweden 1943-45. He graduated with a degree in economics (cand.polit.), and taught the subject as an associate professor and later professor at the University of Copenhagen in the period from 1956 to 1964. In 1958 he became dr.polit.
In 1951 he was employed by Danmarks Nationalbank and in 1962 became director of the savings bank Bikuben, where he became CEO two years later.
He has also held a number of positions of trust, including as chairman of the Politiken Foundation's board, controlling the business side of the newspapers Politiken and Ekstra Bladet, and an honorary member of the Group of 30.

Attitude towards the Euro
Hoffmeyer was a member of the Delors Committee, which in 1988-89 prepared for the EU's Economic and Monetary Union, which later developed into the Euro. Hoffmeyer stated in 2012 that it was a mistake to incorporate so many economically weak countries into the Euro because their weakened competitiveness under a strong non-devaluable currency creates unemployment. Hoffmeyer recommended the solution to help these countries opt out of the Euro with a "golden handshake".[1]
