Italian economist interested in privatization who attended Bilderberg/1979. Later charged but acquitted in Mani pulite.

Vittorio Barattieri was an Italian economist who attended the 1979 Bilderberg meeting.

Career

He was Technical Assistant to the Executive Director for Italy in the International Monetary Fund. He moved to the staff of the Bank of Italy by 1974.[1] By 1982, he was a high-ranking aide in the Ministry for Industry.[2]

“There's been a major change in thinking. Ten years ago, public was good, and private was bad, he added. The attitude has changed. Today all the talk is of privatization. Sure, much of it is just talk, but it was talk that was unheard of 10 years ago”
Vittorio Barattieri (1982)  [3]

Mani pulite

In 1998 he was in court, charged with corruption[4]. The chapter of the Mani pulite investigation involving Daniel Kraus and Vittorio Barattieri, at the time Director general of the Ministry of Industry, concerned the funding provided by the ministry to the Italian steel industry: almost 1,400 billion lire between 1982 and 1987, paid to the major industrialists in the sector as compensation for the reduction in the production capacity of the plants required by the European Community. The investigations, launched in the spring of 1993, started from the revelations of Aldo Molino, who had reported a 200 million bribe requested by Francesco De Lorenzo to unlock the subsidy to a steel mill in Brescia.[5]

For Kraus (at the time representative of the interests of Confindustria in the ministerial committee) and for Barattieri the arrests took place, but they were acquitted[6]. In his conclusions, the magistrate asserted that no charges can be brought against Barattieri and Kraus. And the magistrate raised a request to proceed against Molino for slander.[5]
