Salafism (sect) | |
---|---|
Salafism is a revival movement within Sunni Islam founded in the late 19th century and aimed to achieve a renewal of Muslim life and had a major influence on many Muslim thinkers and movements across the Islamic world.[1]
Salafi (follower of Salaf) means any reform movement that calls for resurrection of Islam by going back to its origin. The Salafis' religious significance lay in the statement attributed to Muhammad:
"The best of my community are my generation, the ones who follow them and the ones who follow them", a period believed to exemplify the purest form of Islam.
The generations of Muslims after the third are referred to as the Khalaf.[2]
