Dr. Rüşdü Saraçoğlu is a Turkish central banker. From 1987 to 1993 he was Chairman of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey, where his administration set the stage for the subsequent stabilization of the Turkish currency.
Career
Rüşdü is the grandson of Mehmet Şükrü Saracoğlu, one of Turkey's former prime ministers, and the son of Hüseyin Aydın Saracoğlu, the former Head of the 9th Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Appeals.
After graduating from Ankara Atatürk High School, he graduated from METU's Department of Economics and Statistics. He received his PhD from the University of Minnesota Department of Economics in 1980[1].
After earning his doctorate degree, Dr. Saraçoğlu went on to work at Boston College and at the International Monetary Fund where he caught the attention of Turkey’s Prime Minister Oczal. The Prime Minster later appointed Dr. Saraçoğlu as Governor of the Bank of Turkey where his administration set the stage for the subsequent stabilization of the Turkish currency.
Dr. Saraçoğlu was elected as a member of the parliament in 1995 and served a term as Minister of the Economy in the 53rd Government of the Republic of Turkey.
Saraçoğlu serves as a member of the Board of Tekfen Holding, the Aspen Institute Italia, the Trilateral Commission, and the Carnegie Economic Reform Network.[2]
He was the President of Koç Holding Banking and Insurance Group, and was also the Chairman of the Board at Koçbank and Yapı Kredi Bank. He retired on December 31, 2007.
He also was the Chairman of Allianz Insurance, Turkey.
