Ruşen Çakır is a Turkish journalist and member of the Advisory Board of the Turkish part of the Open Society Foundations 2012-2016.
Career
He started journalism in Nokta Magazine in 1985. He worked in Tempo, Cumhuriyet, Milliyet, CNN Türk ,Vatan, and NTV. He managed the Democracy, Civil Society and Islamic World Program at the think tank TESEV.
In 1993, he participated to the Human Rights Advocates Training Program at the Columbia University.[1]
He continued to work as a journalist in Vatan newspaper from December 2002 to October 11, 2014. Then he moved to Habertürk Newspaper and wrote columns. Ruşen Çakır was dismissed from Habertürk in 2016, but continues his journalism activities through a media platform called Medyascope. It billets itself heavily as "independent", but has received funding from the US government via the National Endowment for Democracy.[2]
Turkish journalist Ahmet Yüreğir commented that “Americans are sponsoring only radical opposition news portals [like Medyascope]. There is no good intention behind that. The aim is to oppose Turkish government via their proxies".[3]
Private life
Çakir is of the ethnic minority Laz origin. He is married to Müge İplikçi and has a child named Ali Deniz. He graduated from Galatasaray High School . He left his university education at the Economics Department of Boğaziçi University.
