The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans, founded by Paul Soros (brother of deep politician George Soros) and Daisy Soros in 1997, is a United States $90,000 postgraduate fellowship for immigrants and children of immigrants.[1]
Own words
Paul and Daisy Soros decided on a fellowship program because it allowed them to assist young New Americans at critical points in their educations, which they felt was an unmet need. They also wished to call attention to the extensive and diverse contributions of New Americans to the quality of life in the United States.[2] Paul Soros died in 2015.
The program draws more than 1,800 applications annually for just 30 fellowships.[3]
The selection process is focused on identifying the most promising New Americans who are poised to make significant contributions to the nation through their work. In addition, the selection team looks for a commitment to the United States’ fundamental principles and ideals. The Fellows can study in any degree-granting program in any field at any university in the United States.[2]
Network
Each Fellow attends two weekend conferences of Fellows. The great majority continue to be involved with the program through regional dinners, service in the selection process for later classes, and through the Paul & Daisy Soros Fellows Association.[2]
The fellows[4] have a noticeable presence in "public health" leadership positions, including U.S. surgeon general Vivek Murthy; former California surgeon general Nadine Burke-Harris; "public health" epidemiologist Eric Feigl-Ding; Nirav D. Shah, director of Maine CDC, former director of Illinois Department of Health; Sachin H. Jain who held leadership positions in the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services and others.
In politics, fellows include Republican politician Vivek Ramaswamy and Julissa Reynoso, chief of staff to Jill Biden and former U.S. ambassador to Spain. In 2023, as Ramaswamy announced he was becoming a presidential candidate, he paid a Wikipedia editor to remove mention his receipt of a fellowship in 2011. Ramaswamy also paid to remove mention of his close relationship with professor Douglas Melton, a scientist who helped pioneer mRNA "vaccines".[5]
