Charles Murray is a spooky US social scientist. His career began in a secret CIA-funded counterinsurgency operation in rural Thailand during the Vietnam War, a program whose stated purpose included applying counter-insurgency strategies tested in rural Thailand to the US' own restive Afro-American population. From the 1980s, he was promoted for his divide and rule focus on innate intelligence rather than any societal influences to explain poverty.[1]

Education and spooky research

Murray was born in 1943 in Newton, Iowa, where he also grew up. Murray took a BA in history from Harvard University in 1965.[2] He joined the Peace Corps in Thailand the same year, staying abroad for six years. After 1968, he conducted research in Thailand on counterinsurgency for the CIA-connected[3] American Institutes for Research (AIR) on behalf of the US government.

The American Institutes for Research's own description of its counter-insurgency program included[4]: "assassinating key spokesmen, strengthening retaliatory mechanisms and similar preventative measures" and efforts to "neutralize the political successes already achieved by groups committed to the 'wrong' side. This typically involves direct military confrontation." The AIR program also tested crop destruction and artificially-induced starvation in order to pacify restive populations, described as a "behavior control plan enhanced by crop destruction."

Murray continued research work at AIR upon his return to the US. He took a PhD in political science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1974. From 1974 to 1981, Murray worked for the AIR eventually becoming chief political scientist. While at AIR, Murray supervised evaluations of how to utilize the fields of urban education, welfare services, daycare, adolescent pregnancy, services for the elderly, and criminal justice.[5]

Criticism

As of 2021 the SPLC termed him an "extremist" who "has become one of the most influential social scientists in America, using racist pseudoscience and misleading statistics to argue that social inequality is caused by the genetic inferiority of the black and Latino communities, women and the poor."[6]
