Austrian politician, Bilderberg 1979, died in a small plane crash in 1989

Alfred Dallinger was an Austrian trade unionist and politician (SPÖ). He was a member of Parliament from 1974 to 1983 and Federal Minister of Social Affairs from 1980 until his death in an 1989 air crash.

Career

A trained druggist, he became youth secretary of the Union of Private Sector Employees in 1948, deputy managing director and central secretary in 1966 and from 1974 chairman and managing director.

In 1974 he became a member of parliament, the Austrian National Council, and retained his mandate until the 1983 elections.

He was an advocate of reducing working hours to a 35-hour week. His most controversial idea was that of a value-added tax to secure the social security system. This idea was criticized by the opposition, business representatives and the press as a "machine tax".

In 1980, Dallinger was appointed by Bruno Kreisky as Minister of Social Affairs. In this capacity he was a member of several cabinets in the 1980s.

Death

On 23 February 1989 Alfred Dallinger was a passenger on Rheintalflug-Flight 102, which crashed into the Bodensee for unclear reasons. All 11 people aboard the plane were killed.
