Alexandre Joubert-Bompard is a French businessman. He attended the 2009 Bilderberg meeting as a media executive. Since July 2017, he has also been chairman and CEO of the supermarket chain Carrefour. In 2017, he was also member of the Board of Directors of Le Siècle.[1]
Background
He was born on October 4, 1972 in Saint-Étienne[2] and grew up in Megève. His father, Alain Bompard, was head of the Rally for the Republic (RPR) branch of Haute-Savoie, deputy mayor of Megève in 1983, then business manager and president of the AS Saint-Étienne football club between 1997 and 2003[3][4].
Education
He was admitted to the Institute of Political Studies in Paris and graduated in 1994[5]. He prepared for the competition of the National School of Administration (ENA), where he was admitted in 1999. His fourth-place ranking gave him a pathway to high positions in the public and private sectors.
Career
In 2003, after a year as a project manager with the head of the department of the General Inspectorate of Finance, he took the position of technical advisor to François Fillon, then Minister of Social Affairs and Labor[6].
He joined Canal+ in 2004 as chief of staff to President Bertrand Meheut, and became director of sports in June 2005.[7] He took the helm of the Europe 1 as chairman and CEO of radio and its subsidiary "sport" in June 2008.[8] Under his presidency, the station has experienced increasing advertising revenues.[9]
In the spring of 2010, his name was regularly mentioned in the media as a possible successor to Patrick de Carolis at the head of France Televisions.[10]
On November 23, 2010, he moved to the presidency of the retail chain Fnac, specialized in the distribution of cultural and technological goods. Faced with the competition of online commerce and the erosion of the music and video market, in July 2011, he presented a strategic plan for the transformation of the brand called "Fnac 2015" and based on four pillars: the expansion of the offer, the strengthening of customer relations, the development of the fleet of stores in medium-sized cities and the implementation of a multichannel integration between physical retailers and the fnac.com website.[11] To strengthen the brand's digital strategy and counter the Amazon Kindle, he announced in October 2011 the launch of an e-reader in partnership with the Canadian manufacturer Kobo.[12]
On June 9, 2017, the supermarket chain Carrefour Group's Board of Directors announced that he would become CEO, effective on July 18, 2017[13].
On January 23, 2018, after six months at the head of the group, he announced his strategic plan, entitled "Carrefour 2022", which sets as its objective for the group to "become the world leader in the food transition for all", drawing a parallel with the energy transition[14][15]. To illustrate the food transition, Alexandre Bompard cites among the actions already undertaken or to come the management of resources, the sustainability of packaging, the reduction of food waste, responsible purchases, the democratization of organic and the quality of the distributor's brands.[16]
