The Alawite sect is an esoteric Arab ethnoreligious group living chiefly in Syria and follow Alawism, which splintered from early Shia as a ghulat branch during the ninth century.

Twelver school
Allaouites venerate Ali ibn Abi Talib, the "first Imam" in the Twelver school, as the physical manifestation of God. The group was founded by Ibn Nusayr during the 9th century. Ibn Nusayr was a disciple of the tenth Twelver Imam, Ali al-Hadi, and of the eleventh Twelver Imam, Hasan al-Askari. For this reason, Alawites are also called Nusayris.[1]
Important minority
Surveys suggest Alawites represent an important portion of the Syrian population and are a significant minority in the Hatay Province of Turkey and northern Lebanon. There is also a population living in the village of Ghajar in the Golan Heights, where there had been two other Alawite villages (Ayn Fit and Za'ura) before the Six-Day War. The Alawites form the dominant religious group on the Syrian coast and towns near the coast, which are also inhabited by Sunnis and Christians.[2]
2025 massacres
On 7 March 2025, as the 2025 massacres of Syrian Alawites were taking place, Craig Murray posted on X:
- Mass executions of Allaouites - irrespective of age or gender - are now well and truly under way in Syria by HTS, exactly as predicted.
- Silence from both neoliberal and Salafist HTS cheerleaders in UK.
And Patrick Henningsen posted:
- These are some of the dead in the Alawite town of Al-Haffa.
- It’s pretty incredible how all these Middle East ‘experts’ and academics who were talking-up the fake ‘Arab Spring’ and regime change to oust “the Assad regime” in Syria for last 15 years - are all suddenly dumbfounded by the results of their collective efforts.
- They all have blood on their hands.[4]
Gabbard not on HTS side
On 8 March 2025, Aaron Maté posted:
Today's sectarian massacres in Syria, overseen by Syria's ruling Al Qaeda offshoot, help explain why there was so much neocon panic over Tulsi Gabbard's nomination as US intel chief.
Whereas previous intel leaders like CIA's John Brennan and Michael Morell armed and whitewashed Syria's Al Qaeda-dominated insurgency, Gabbard has consistently called it out:
Tulsi Gabbard quotes Jake Sullivan's February 2012 email to Hillary Clinton: "Al Qaeda is on our side in Syria." She then points out that "Syria is now controlled by an Al Qaeda offshoot."
Gabbard has long been smeared because she declined to take Al Qaeda's side in Syria.[5]
