Jonkheer Aarnout Alexander Loudon was a Dutch business executive and politician, descended from the noble Loudon family, a well-known family of diplomats and entrepreneurs. He attended the 1984 Bilderberg conference as Chairman of Akzo and director of the Confederation of Netherlands Industry and Employers.

Background

As a child during the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies, Loudon was interned in various Japanese camps. Loudon's father, who died in the war at the age of 35 on board a ship with prisoners of war in the Dutch East Indies, was Hugo Alexander Loudon (1908-1944). His mother was Henriëtte Arnoldine Snouck Hurgronje (1912-1994), who remarried in 1947 to Mr. Gijs baron van Hardenbroek, Lord of Hardenbroek Castle (1902-1960), later treasurer and master of ceremonies to Queen Juliana and a member of the High Council of nobility. Since her death in 1994, Hardenbroek Castle has been owned by her second son Francis Loudon, the one and a half year younger brother of Aarnout Loudon. He married Talitha Boon in 1962, daughter of writer and diplomat Dr. Hendrik Nicolaas Boon (1911-1991), with whom he had two sons.

Education

After studying law at Utrecht University and fulfilling his military service with the artillery, Loudon married Thalita Boon (1939) in1962. They had two sons. He was an enthusiastic rider and rode cross-country and Concours Hippiques, did a lot of dressage and got into the Dutch youth team. He later rode fox hunts and became a member of the Board of the Koninklijke Nederlandsche Jachtvereeniging (KNJV).

Career

Loudon worked at the Bank Mees & Hope from 1964 to 1969 and at the Akzo concern from 1969 to 1994, where he became chairman of the board in 1982 as predecessor of Kees van Lede. Loudon was also a director of the Confederation of Netherlands Industry and Employers, of which Van Lede was chairman in the eighties.

After his retirement, Loudon was a member of Parliament for the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy from 1995 to 1999. He was spokesperson for energy and environment. He also held various commissions. He was a supervisory board member at Hoogovens, Shell, ABN Amro, HBG, De Nederlandsche Bank, Arcadis and AkzoNobel[1], a member of the advisory board of the German insurance giant Allianz and vice chairman of Vereniging Rembrandt. He was also an advisor to the Conference Board in New York, an international think tank. In June 2008 his last board membership ended, at the Concertgebouw.

In September 2021, Loudon died after a brief illness.[2]
