José Manuel Albares Bueno is a Spanish diplomat who has been serving as Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation in the government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez since 2021.[1]

Early life

Albares is from the Usera district of Madrid. He studied law and economics at the University of Deusto.

Career

His diplomatic career began as a consul in Bogotá, Colombia and advisor to the Spanish representation at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris.[2] He was also the founder of the think tank Círculo de Reflexión Internacional (CRI), which dealt with foreign policy issues and international relations. In 2015 he was involved in the election campaign of the candidate Pedro Sánchez and was involved in the elaboration of the election program of the Partido Socialista Obrero Español. He then worked temporarily as a cultural attaché at the Spanish embassy in Paris.

After Mariano Rajoy lost his position as prime minister in June 2018 by a vote of no confidence in parliament, Sanchéz became his successor.
