George Pagoulatos is a Greek economics professor who was Senior Advisor and Director of Strategy at the Prime Minister's Office under two Prime Ministers of Greece (2011-2012). He attended the Bilderberg for the first time in 2019.
Pagoulatos believes that austerity (introduced by economists like himself) may also help to explain how Greeks have put aside their traditionally defiant attitude towards authority.[1]
He is associated with the US think tank Brookings Institution. In 2023, he was appointed Greek Ambassador to the OECD.
Education
Pagoulatos holds a law degree from the University of Athens and a D.Phil. in Politics from the University of Oxford, where he was a Rhodes scholar.[2]
Career
George Pagoulatos is Professor of European Politics and Economy at the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB), and Visiting Professor at the College of Europe in Bruges. He was Director General of the Athens-based Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP) ) (2019-2023) and sits on the Governing Board of the Brussels-based European Policy Centre (EPC).
He has extensive experience in providing macro-advisory and analysis to big corporations and organizations. He is a frequent keynote speaker in international conferences and corporate events, and has been widely interviewed and quoted in the international media regarding Greek and EU political economy and politics.
Author of several books and many articles, he is a regular columnist in the Sunday edition of the corporate media Greek newspaper Kathimerini since 2007. In 2011-12 he served as senior advisor and director of strategy at the PM Office under Greece'bs two "non-political" prime ministers.[3]His publications focus on the EMU and the EU, political economy of finance, political economy of reform (pro-market).
With extensive experience as a consultant for big corporations, he was the "citizens" representative for Greece in the Conference on the Future of Europe (2021-22)[2], a proposal of the European Commission and the European Parliament with the aim of looking at the medium- to long-term future of the EU.[4]

"Maybe it has helped that Greece has been in an almost constant state of crisis management since 2010...we’ve been well past the kind of complacency the economies that have been doing well might allow themselves."[1]
