Julia Jäkel was CEO of the German publisher Gruner + Jahr, and then board member of the corporate media conglomerate Bertelsmann, coordinating its contents. In 2024 with fellow Bilderbergers Thomas de Maizière and Peer Steinbrück, she created a 30 point plan to militarise the country, including "integrating civilian and military leadership" and use of the military against the own population.

Education
Jäkel studied history, political science, and economics at Heidelberg University and Harvard University. She holds an MPhil in International relations from the University of Cambridge.[1][2]
Career
In 1997, Jäkel completed the Bertelsmann Entrepreneurs Program and joined Gruner + Jahr, where she rose through the ranks.[3] In 2012, Jäkel was appointed to the Executive Board, taking responsibility for the German business,[4] and a few months later, she became chief executive officer of Gruner + Jahr. She reorganized the portfolio, focusing on Germany and France, and a digital transformation[5] [6][7] From the beginning of 2018, Bertelsmann merged its German media businesses into the Bertelsmann Content Alliance, with Julia Jäkel taking over the chairmanship. The Content Alliance includes the media group RTL, the television production company UFA, the book publishing group Penguin Random House, the music company BMG and the publishing group Gruner + Jahr.[8]
Jäkel became a member of the Bertelsmann Group Management Committee in 2013 and chaired the Bertelsmann Content Alliance right from its start in 2019, coordinating all content businesses of Bertelsmann in Germany.[9]
In 2021, Jäkel left both Gruner + Jahr and Bertelsmann.[10]
Covid
In March 2020, Bertelsmann announced that "the companies of the Bertelsmann Content Alliance in Germany support the fight against the spread of the novel corona virus under the slogan "Together against Corona". "With our media we reach almost the entire population in Germany, so we see it as our duty to make a contribution, to inform and to show possibilities for cohesion with our initiative," said Jäkel[11].
Making the government "more capable of acting"
In the summer 2024 Julia Jäkel, Dr. Thomas de Maizière, Peer Steinbrück (all three Bilderbergers), and Prof. Andreas Voßkuhle launched "An initiative for a state capable of acting". By March 2025, it had ready a list 30 proposals to changing the legal system to make the state more "capable". The Initiative was paid by the Hertie, Mercator, Thyssen and Zeit Bucerius Foundations. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier was patron. The plan included heavy militarization the country, including "integrating civilian and military leadership" and use of the military against the own population.[12]
