Spanish "inner circle" business executive who attended Bilderberg/2019.

Javier Monzón is an "inner circle" Spanish business executive who attended the Bilderberg for the first time in 2019, as chairman of PRISA, "one of the most important education and media groups in the Spanish-speaking world, present in 23 countries".[1]

Monzón could be considered a member of what the sociologist Michael Useem defined in the eighties as the inner circle, or central circle of the business world: a group of leaders who accumulate so many boards directorships and key social positions that they become kind of responsible for a private state, one that through its foundations and think tanks claims the free market but that, in practice, counts on public money as one of its main sources of benefits. Monzón's key positions and contacts would allow him to jump from one top stock market company to another without having to leave this dense capitalist network.
The strategic importance of his social position rhymes with key personal contacts: firstly, his friendship with the now emeritus king, crown of the Spanish power elite in the past decades; secondly, with the proximity to former PM Felipe González[2].

Career

Monzón is part of a mutually enriching network of politicians and business executives including the former king and former prime minister Felipe González and his family, and Ana Botín

"Javier Monzón is a Madrid-born economist with wide ranging professional experience in business, finance and technology. He was Director of Corporate Finance Banking at Caja Madrid and managing partner of Arthur Andersen. He has also held the positions of CFO and Director of Corporate Development at Telefónica, and he has was also President of Telefonica Internacional. He was Chairman of Indra from the year of its creation in 1993 until 2015.

He has also sat on, and continues to serve on, the boards of a number of private and listed Spanish and international companies. He is also an investor and adviser to start-ups and technology-based capital development funds.

Javier Monzón is firmly committed to promoting and fostering entrepreneurship, education and innovation. He has been Vice Chairman of the Social Council of the Carlos III University and is currently Chairman of the Executive Committee of the CyD Foundation (Knowledge and Development Foundation), a trustee of the Princess of Girona Foundation, trustee and board member of Endeavor Spain and member of the International Advisory Council of Brookings.
