Second largest supermarket chain in the United Kingdom=

Sainsbury's is the second largest supermarket chain in the United Kingdom.

From 1922 to 1995 they were the largest.

History

David Sainsbury was a large donor to the losing remain campaign. Now Sainsbury's is hiking prices and blaming rising costs on Brexit.

Founded in London in 1869.

In 2014, a branch removed Kosher products in fear they would be attacked by Anti-Israel activists.[1]

David Sainsbury gave £8 million to the remain campaign in the 2016 EU Referendum. He is a critic of Brexit.[2]

A proposed merger with Asda was blocked in 2019 by the Competition and Markets Authority over concerns of increased prices for consumers.

In August 2021, Morrisons was taken over by Clayton, Dubilier & Rice. It is expected that Sainsbury's will be the next British supermarket to be taken over by a private-equity firm.[3]
